How to Make a Shoe Box Movie Projector
Making a movie projector out of a shoebox is fun and not very difficult. Once you have a projector, you also need to draw a movie using wet-erase markers and blank transparencies. When everything is ready, invite your friends over to watch the show projected onto a light colored wall or a movie screen if you have one.
- Difficulty:
- Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
- shoebox with a lid black tempera paint or spray paint paint brush scissors magnifying lens duct tape flashlight with a switch on the side of the handle, not on the bulb blank transparencies wet erase markers transparent double sided tape
-
- 1 Paint the inside of the shoebox black. Paint the inside of the lid of the shoebox black as well. Let the paint dry thoroughly. This may take a couple of hours.
- 2 Trace around the outside of the magnifying lens on the outside front side of the shoe box. Cut this circle out using sharp scissors. Duct tape the edge of the lens to attach it to the inside of the shoebox, so that the bulging surface points out through the hole. Duct tape the edge of the lens on the outside of the shoebox also.
- 3 Cut a 3-inch long vertical slit in the side wall of the shoe box one inch from the right corner where the side meets the front that has the lens. Cut another 3-inch slit one inch from the left front corner. The movie film will slide into the left side of the shoebox through the left slit. It will slide out of the right side of the shoe box through the right slit.
- 4 Trace around the narrowest part of your flashlight on the back wall of the shoebox directly opposite the lens on the front. Cut out this area so that you can push the flashlight through. The light will be on the inside of the shoe box projector. The handle and the switch will be on the outside of the shoe box projector so that you can control the light to make it project the design on your film strip through the lens and onto the screen. If any light can get into the shoebox between the side of the flashlight and the box, use duct tape to block it.
- 5 Create your movie. First cut the transparencies into pieces that are 8 inches long and 2-1/2 inches wide. Start the drawing about 4 inches from the right margin. Draw a series of poses to make a character move so that each frame (about a 2 inch section of the drawing) only changes in a very small way. Tape lengths of film together using double sided tape until the whole movie is one long strip. Insert the film up-side down through the left slit. Pull it through to the right slit. Put the lid back on the shoebox. Turn on the flash light. You may need to adjust the distance between the lens of the shoebox and the screen to focus the projected image.
